Igniting Practice Change through the Triple Aim Approach: From pilot to system collaboration to strategically lower contamination rates for better patient outcomes

WVU Medicine, the largest health system in West Virginia, recognized the detrimental impact of false-positive blood cultures on patient safety and quality outcomes. The collaborative focus of system-wide quality leaders was to reduce and sustain blood culture rates below 3%, with a visionary goal to be 1% or less in support of its diagnostic, antimicrobial, and financial stewardship objectives. One hospital, United Health Center, piloted multiple concerted practices before achieving success with an approach that combined culture change, value analysis, and evidence-based practices and technologies.

Watch this webinar to learn about their compelling journey to elevate the standard of care for their patients, the unique “triple aim” approach that has achieved >80% compliance with new practices over a sustained period of time, and the clinical and economic value they delivered by reducing blood culture contamination by 81% hospital wide.

Attendees Will Learn:

  • The magnitude and scope of the issue of blood culture contamination on patient and quality outcomes, and financial stewardship for hospitals
  • The collective vision of WVU Medicine to surpass the accepted norm for blood culture contamination rates
  • How a “triple aim” approach focused on culture change, value analysis, and evidence-based best practices and technologies supported diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship efforts
