Everyday Hero: Meghan

May 3, 2021

Meghan Miskell

Assistant Clinical Manager, Emergency Department@ Advocate Aurora Trinity

“Think about how you would want your friends and family to be cared for and deliver that care”

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of being an ACM is supporting the team and seeing they feel supported.

Who are your “everyday heroes” in the work place?

The emergency department nurses, techs and doctors. They are so resilient and strong. We see a lot and go through a lot in a shift. And seeing the team come back everyday with positivity and eager to learn attitudes is so impressive.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

My grandma told me that worrying was the most pointless emotion. If you are concerned about something you have control over, prepare for it instead of worrying. If you don’t have control, then don’t make the situation worse by making yourself sick over it. – Although hard to not worry sometimes, it was great advice.

Who inspires you and why?

My dad. He has always had a great work ethic, was extremely present as a father, my biggest cheerleader and just has a positive attitude. He still to this day looks for opportunities to learn and grow. And he is the kindest person anyone will ever meet.

Share a defining moment in your life and career.

Covid, which I think will be the answer for a lot of our health care workers. Being in healthcare and in leadership durning the start of covid was not only difficult physically and mentally, but also really scary. The challenges of ensuring the staff was up to date on the constant changes and being a support for them encouraged me to grow not only as a leader, but also as a person. And I think everyone in the world would agree, since Covid, we all hold those we love closer.

What your most proud accomplishment?

My development as a nurse and leader at Trinitys ED the last 6 years.

What is your personal motto?

You will receive back what you put out in the universe.

What advice would you have for a student entering into this job?

To remind yourself constantly that the patient is someones friend and family member. To think about how you would want your friends and family to cared for and deliver that care.

Since you are our everyday hero, if you were to have one superhero power, what power would it be and why?

To teleport, so I would never have to fly or drive too far.

What is your greatest motivation?

Happiness is my greatest motivation. People so often stay in situations that make them unhappy. I constantly reevaluate if my choices are making me happy and the people around me happy.
